The Calderdale Women's Support Service based in the Domestic Violence Support Team offers information, support, and safety planning advice to women affected by Domestic Violence.

What do we do?

If you are a woman who has been affected by any form of domestic abuse, whether from a current or former partner, the Calderdale Women's Support Service can help you by providing information, practical and emotional support, and safety planning advice. We can talk over the phone or meet with you either at the WomenCentre in Halifax or at safe outreach venues across Calderdale.

The service can take referrals from women themselves and from workers in other agencies provided they have gained the consent of the woman to refer her. The service can liaise with both statutory and voluntary agencies on behalf of the women they are supporting in order to provide a holistic package of care to meet the woman's needs. The Service works with all levels of domestic abuse and violence and a woman does not have to have experienced physical violence to access it. The service has a BME worker who can provide culturally sensitive support and advice on a range of issues including forced marriage, and immigration.

One of our Support Workers, along with the IDVA (see separate page) offers a weekly two hour outreach surgery in the Ovenden and Mixenden areas (Ovenden on Tuesday mornings and Mixenden on Wednesday mornings). If you are living in the North Halifax area and would like to access the outreach support, please contact the Service on the number below.

Statistics

The Service received 1,574 referrals during the last year (April 2007-March 2008). The majority of our referrals are from the Police, and we also receive referrals from women themselves and from agencies such as health, housing, Probation and Care Services. We are working with an average of 65 women at any one time. Some of our cases have complex issues, including child protection, substance misuse and mental health, and/or feature serious levels of domestic violence necessitating referral to the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Meetings (MARACS).

This results in Support Workers needing to attend a number of meetings and liaise with a wide range of agencies in order to ensure that a comprehensive package of support and risk management is in place for women. But the service is here to support women experiencing all levels of domestic abuse and violence.
